On Chinese networks
On hotel Wi‑Fi or a local SIM card, WhatsApp gets stuck on “Connecting…”. Messages stay on one grey tick, calls never ring and photos don't download. Nothing tells you it's blocked — it just quietly doesn't work.
Apps in China
Does WhatsApp work in China?
Not on Chinese networks — WhatsApp has been blocked in mainland China since 2017. On a ChinaeSIMGo eSIM it works normally: messages, calls, photos and voice notes, no VPN.

Ready to roamMainland China only eSIM
With a ChinaeSIMGo eSIM
ChinaeSIMGo is a roaming eSIM, so your phone never uses a Chinese internet connection. Traffic leaves through a partner network outside mainland China — WhatsApp sees an ordinary connection and works the way it does at home. There is nothing to install or switch on, and it keeps working for your whole trip.
Good to know
- Keep your home SIM in the phone. WhatsApp stays on your own number, and you can still receive a verification SMS if it asks for one.
- Most people in China use WeChat instead. If you need to message a hotel, guide or driver, install WeChat before you fly — it works on the eSIM too.
