On Chinese networks
On hotel Wi‑Fi or a local SIM card the map stays blank, search returns nothing and your saved places don't load. Offline maps aren't a workaround either: Google doesn't offer offline downloads for mainland China.
Apps in China
Does Google Maps work in China?
Not on Chinese networks — all Google services are blocked in mainland China. On a ChinaeSIMGo eSIM, Google Maps loads normally, including your saved places and lists, no VPN.

Ready to roamMainland China only eSIM
With a ChinaeSIMGo eSIM
ChinaeSIMGo is a roaming eSIM, so your phone never uses a Chinese internet connection. Traffic leaves through a partner network outside mainland China — Google Maps sees an ordinary connection and works the way it does at home. There is nothing to install or switch on, and it keeps working for your whole trip.
Good to know
- Google's map data for China is thin and often out of date. Use it for your saved places and reviews, and use Apple Maps or Amap (Gaode) for walking directions and metro routes.
- Save hotel and sight names in Chinese characters — taxi drivers and DiDi find them faster than English names.
